In 2006 the organist Aart Bergwerff played the worldpremiere of ”Canto Ostinato” by Simeon ten Holt on the church organ. Probably the best-known Dutch composition ever written for a keyboard instrument.
Composed in 1976, this piece has been performed numerous times and has been recorded by different pianists.
In 2007 Aart Bergwerff recorded his organ version of the “Canto Ostinato” on CD, played on the 1839 Holtgräve organ in the Lebuïnuskerk in Deventer, in cooperation with producer Pieter Leeflang.
The CD has been well received by the public and the press. “Luister”, the monthly classical music magazine wrote:
“ The little more than one hour long lasting version by Berwerff, played on the late baroque Holtgräve organ in the Grote Kerk of Deventer, is very transparent in sound, with beautiful seamless (de)crescendi. A piece with healing eradiation for organists!”( Rene`Verwer, Luister/voorjaar 2008) In 2011 a new edition of the CD appeared, provided with a new lay-out made by graphic designer Gérard van Betlehem.
Aart Bergwerff often plays Canto Ostinato live in concerts and festivals, in different instrumentations and combinations such as with derwish dancer Kadir Sonuk.
